These incredible memoirs have been recorded here for the descendants of the Clucas family and Kermode family of Kionslieu Farm in the Isle of Man.
The 20 page introduction was given to us around 20 years ago. Having re typed it word for word, unbelievably I received the full 100 page memoir by email the very next day! After much frustration attempting to upload the pdf files to our website I have found a solution. I’ve taken screen shots of each page and so I hope you will bear with me as I add them in sections.
And I look back to joys long fled,
..where God keeps for me
A little island in the sea.
Kionslieu is a farm near Foxdale, I.O.M. (Ellan Vannin), where my father was born, the youngest of 11 children. I started to write a memoir of the Kermodes of Kionslieu who moved there in 1881. It proved difficult to trace the family far back as they hardly ever left wills or other legal documents and did not own land until c.1800; or rather it is likely that they had owned land but this branch of the family was descended from a younger son who had not inherited from his father’s land. In the 19th century there seems to have been no shortage of money, and this branch moved from perhaps craftsmen status to landowner. Their “arrival”’ was indicated in the Directory in Wm Thwaites’ Isle of Man published in 1863, where in Marown, J Kermode was among the ‘principal landed proprietors’ and Kermode, John among “farmers”. (his father had not been mentioned in 1852)
